Today, Deputy Chairman of Batumi Municipality City Council Lasha Sirabidze and members of Education, Culture, Tourism and Sport Commission of Batumi City Council met Luka Asatiani named grant-holder students. Deputy Chairman of City Council Lasha Sirabidze, Chairman of Education, Culture, Tourism and Sport Commission Nino Beradze and members of the same commission Natalia Zoidze and Phridon Bregvadze gave students books “Luka Asatiani” written by member of City Council, Writer and Public Figure-Ramaz Surmanidze. At the meeting, author of the book, Ramaz Surmanidze himself spoke about merit and desert of Luka Asatiani. This event was initiated by the member of City Council-Natalia Zoidze.
Scholarship of Luka Asatiani for successful students was established in 2015 year by the initiative of the members of Education, Culture, Tourism and Sport Commission, which is fulfilled in the frames of higher education promotion program.   Scholarship of Luka Asatiani is given to the students of Batumi with high academic qualifications, who study in different authorized universities who are enrolled on the first and second stage high educational program. Sub-program of municipality “Luka Asatiani scholarship for successful students is defined by 2016 budget with 101 thousand GEL. Amount of scholarship is 200 GEL.
Famous public figure Luka Asatiani was the first head of Batumi City and governed it till the death. He has great merit in the development of Batumi. Especially should be marked planning of Batumi, draining of swap on the city territory, building of sewer-pipe weeper (among them channels of Jhilinski and Ivanovi), which crossed the whole city. At the same time law places of the city were covered by gravel and soil. This caused drying up of swampy places and annihilation of dangerous illness malaria. As the result it became possible to make new streets and organization of public services and amenities. Personal initiative of Luka Asatiani was construction of council building that beatifies our city today. During his rule was built present republican hospital that serves population of Ajara even today. He opened primary classes for all nationality on their language. Grateful citizens at the beginning of the century street were the building of council stood named after Luka Asatiani. In 2013 year bust of Luka Asatiani was installed on the street named after him.
